EVERETT -- A frantic blend of sewing, tears and laughter is stitching a tale of hope in Cindy Windecker's garage. Friends there are coming together in an effort to save the seamstress' home.

D orothy Moulton Rankin, a retired federal worker who taught sewing in Africa and owned a tailoring and fashion shop in Baltimore in the 1970s and '80s, died July 14 at her home in Reisterstown after suffering a heart attack. She was 84.
